How Does Exhaust Affect Engine Performance?
24th Apr 2024
Exhaust is the result of an engine’s performance. As fuel burns, waste products like carbon monoxide and other gases exit through the exhaust pipes. It might seem like that’s that, and exhaust has little to no effect on the way the engine operates. Not true. An exhaust system can make or break an engine. How does exhaust affect engine performance? Here’s the how and why of it.
Low Power
The surest way for an exhaust system to negatively affect engine performance is lacking maintenance. Damaged or clogged exhaust systems can cause back pressure, which forces an engine to struggle to pump out the CO and other gases, reducing the engine’s power. A clogged system can decrease acceleration and put undue stress on the engine, causing an eventual breakdown. Clean out the system and replace filters as needed to prevent blockage by soot and grime.
Reduced Fuel Efficiency
Clogged exhaust systems don’t just reduce power; they also force the engine to consume even more fuel. The harder the engine works, the more fuel it burns. The more fuel it burns, the fewer miles you get to the gallon. That adds up to higher costs at the fuel pump, which you could have avoided by taking care of your vehicle’s exhaust system. Again, keeping the exhaust system clean is better for the engine and your pocketbook.
Too Darn Hot
All engines run hot. That’s just the nature of internal combustion! However, there is a limit to how hot an engine can get before it breaks down. As we’ve made clear, a poorly maintained exhaust system forces the engine to work much harder than it needs to. When exhaust gases back up in the engine, it’s harder for the machinery to cool down. Overheating can lead to damaged parts and engine failure, which can be dangerous on the road and costly to fix.
Noxious Emissions
In a perfect world, fuel-burning engines wouldn’t release noxious gases like carbon monoxide. But the fact remains that they do, and such gases can hurt the environment. That’s why vehicles are subject to periodic emissions testing. Exhaust systems in good condition reduce the amount of toxic gases they release into the air. A clogged exhaust system doesn’t, and that can mean fines and failed emissions tests.
