4 Methods To Make Your Diesel Truck Louder
19th Dec 2023
There’s nothing more satisfying to a truck driver than the engine’s roar. A loud truck draws attention, though maybe not always the kind they prefer. Still, when showing off their ride at a show or on the open road, a mechanical roar brings a sense of satisfaction to the driver. While some of the noises that engines make can signify serious issues, many drivers seek to increase the powerful sound diesel trucks make upon ignition or when revving the engine. While keeping local noise ordinances and codes in mind and considering your neighbors’ sleeping habits, check out four methods to make your diesel truck louder.
Replace the Headers
Headers transport the truck’s exhaust from the engine to the exhaust system. In general, the factory headers in your truck are probably stock issue and intended to deliver performance without too much noise. If you want the engine to roar, invest in a new set of headers that are larger in diameter.
Bigger headers give more power while boosting sound, but they’re not inexpensive to buy or install. Short-tube headers are somewhat cheaper and deliver a good sound without sacrificing performance. For this modification, bigger is better!
Install a New Mid Pipe
A mid pipe runs between the exhaust system and the muffler. It serves as an equalizer for the gases exiting the engine and controls the sound and fumes. Truck owners still debate the benefits of an H-shaped mid pipe versus an X-shaped one. Many report that while the X-style produces a more high-pitched sound, the H-shape delivers a deeper roar. Discuss this mod with your mechanic before choosing a mid pipe.
Replace the Air Intakes
Your diesel-powered truck likely has an air intake system, which helps your truck run better. However, some air intake systems increase the engine volume without sacrificing performance. Cold-air intakes are best for this process, but short ram intakes can raise more of a ruckus when you throttle the engine. This isn’t an instant fix, but it should aid your ongoing quest.
Remove the Plastic Cover
Here is the last of our four methods to make your diesel truck louder. It should work whether you have a 6.0 Powerstroke exhaust or another system installed. More than likely, your engine is covered with a large piece of plastic to protect it from dust and debris. It probably features a layer of insulation, which isn’t necessary for engine performance, by and large. Removing the cover brings on the noise, but consider reinstalling it when the temperature drops outside to give the engine a protective layer of warmth.
Good luck with your modifications, and please, roar responsibly!
